Progressing in the Interpreter Track

Before enrolling in the course, “Introduction to the Interpreting Profession,” students must demonstrate language competency in American Sign Language, by passing the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) with a score of Intermediate or higher. In the event a student receives an unsatisfactory score, the program director and program committee will review the student’s academic performance and other supporting documentation to recommend whether the student can continue in the interpreting track.

Unsatisfactory Demonstration of Skills

Students with unsatisfactory SLPI scores will need to receive an official letter of permission to progress in the program from the program committee before enrolling in the Introduction to the Interpreting Profession.  Students demonstrating unsatisfactory skills as an interpreter in training and/or as an intern in the workplace must receive an official letter of permission to progress from the program committee.
